NeXT Unleashes A Showstorm

Legendary Toronto booker Dan Burke has just revealed some of the best bets playing at at a number of venues around Toronto.

The next couple of weeks bring a couple of shows that h@tb has been hyping over the last couple weeks. Fiver, the new project from Simone Schmidt of $100, is holding a single release party at the Silver Dollar tonight, June 29th along with Nordic Nomadic and USgirls.

Iowa rockers Radio Moscow will roll into the infamous Comfort Zone along with the awesome Little Foot Long Foot and Biblical on July 12th. Deets are here.

Apparently this is supposed to be kept under wraps but Sarah Harmer is in Music Maul alongside former Weeping Tile bandmate Sticky. The Kingston band are slated to play the Comfort Zone on July 21st with Leonids and Dog Is Blue.

Detroit rockers The Johnny Ill Band will hit The 460 on  July 21 with Deutsche Banks, Mother Teresa and The Miracles and Walls Are Blond.

LA-based neo-goth rockers Nightmare Air are slated to play the Velvet Underground on July 25 with The Disraelis and the Cautioneers.

Montreal Cajun bluegrass band Canailles will bring a taste of the bayou to the Silver Dollar on July 27th. It’s part of Pop Montreal’s POP Off 2 tour. The Unseen Strangers, The Modern Grass and Sin and Swoon are also on the bill.

San Francisco garage rockers Sonny and the Sunsets will play the Silver Dollar on August 11th with Magic Trick, featuring Tim Cohen of the Fresh And Onlys.

OFF! Are playing the Sound Academy in Toronto on July 22 and 23 with the reunited Refused.

– Toronto-based Persian classical artist Mahmood Schricker is holding a CD release party for his debut album NULL at the Drake Hotel in Toronto on July 19.

Stream Gatekeeper’s ‘Tree Drum’

New York EBM duo Gatekeeper has unveiled a special edit of the single ‘Tree Drum’ which includes ‘Pre-Gen’ from his debut album Exo, due out on July 17th via Hippos in Tanks. Give it a listen here.

New media artist and 2011 Rhizome Grant winner, Tabor Robak, created a fully explorable virtual environment that features music from Exo to complement the LP’s release. He also designed the artwork and a special font which can be used to decipher hidden messages within the artwork.

The duo of Aaron David Ross and Matthew Arkell approached the project as an immersive environment, the album is meant to be listened to from front to back. Robak’s first person-style gaming environment finds the listener exploring worlds inspired by each of the album’s tracks.

Looking For A Place To Happen: Canada Day Long Weekend Edition

Long weekends are traditionally a slow time for live music but this upcoming Canada Day long weekend is a definite exception with a couple good bets.

Fiver, the non-country side project from Simone Schmidt of the excellent $100, are holding a 7″ single release party at the Silver Dollar tomorrow night (July 29th) with USgirls and Nordic Nomadic.

The Hidden Cameras are playing Harbourfront Centre on July 1st, Canada Day. Now, the last time I saw them play there, it left me a little cold but it might be an improvement.
