Toronto’s LOLAA have shared the video for ‘Always Been’ from their self-titled EP, out now.
The duo of Lexi Valentine and Nadia Valerie King first appeared in 2016, featuring vocals from Simone Denny of Love Inc., and opened for MSTRKRFT, Helado Negro, Fear of Men and Tkay Maidza. A set during Canadian Music Week 2017 was followed by their single ‘Spirits’;
Valentine and King are probably best known for being part of Toronto power pop trio Magneta Lane. In 2015, the pair decided it was time for something different and worked with producer Jon Drew (F*cked Up/Tokyo Police Club). The music they created had more in common with 80’s pop music and disco that also blended elements of their cultural backgrounds.
“The thing about Latin Americans is that our culture is so colourful. We are always smiling and laughing, we love to dance, we feel immensely – passion, sadness – we celebrate life. We wanted LOLAA to have these ideas at its core, no matter what shape the songs took,” Valentine explained in a statement.
The band takes its name from the Spanish name Dolores (Lola) which means “Lady of Sorrows”. It’s been used in the English-speaking world since the late 19th century.
