It’s taken from Powers’ forthcoming EP, due to be released on Commission Music.
He first gained attention thanks to his co-production work on Joey Bada$$’s RIAA platinum certified single “Devastated”. He’s currently on the road with Joey as the official DJ for his Amerikkkana tour.
Powers grew up in Clinton Hill and Fort Greene, two Brooklyn neighbourhoods known for being breeding grounds for musical talent including Erykah Badu, Mos Def, and Talib Kweli. Music played a big role in his life, he attended his jazz drummer father’s gigs since he was a baby.
“I think the first time I learned to walk was at one of his gigs,” Powers said in a press release.
His mother, a dancer, introduced him to The Neptunes, a band that would prove to be one of his biggest production influences. While he was attending Edward R. Murrow High School, he turned his attention to DJ’ing and met the late Courtney Jamal Dewar, aka Capital STEEZ thanks to his admiration for his rhyming ability. The two discussed starting a hip-hop collective and connected with Joey Bada$$ after a talent show and Pro Era was born.
After spending one semester at Berklee College of Music, where he was attending on a full scholarship, he joined the Pro Era crew on the Best Coast Tour. The exciting year ended in tragedy with STEEZ’s death on December 23, 2012. As he spent the holidays mourning the loss of his friends, the love and condolences came in from the fans they had gained over the years.
It made me realize how many eyes were on us with all the people who were shouting out STEEZ,” he said.
