AKUA Announces Debut Album

AKUA has announced that she will release her debut album, Them Spirits, on March 22.

The Canadian-Ghanaian artist has shared the video for ‘Offering’ as well as a free stream of ‘Heaven’, the second single from the album;

She released her debut EP One’s Company after losing her father to cancer. She went on tour with Solange and after spending years playing some of the biggest stages in the world, she realized that she had not addressed the grief surrounding her father’s passing properly.

AKUA turned to songwriting as part of the grieving process, something that also provided a sense of renewal, two themes the album explores.

She divided her time between Canada and Los Angeles to record the album, which she wrote, recorded and produced by herself. Them Spirits features appearances from Daniel Aged (inc.), Sam Wilkes and Mocky.

Stream The Northern Coast’s ‘Blindside’ for Free

Calgary indie rockers The Northern Coast have shared a free stream of ‘Blindside’, the second single from their debut album The Great Divide, out on March 22.

Breaking up is a central theme in the album as vocalist Arron Crook, guitarist Hunter Hansen and producer Josh Rob Gwilliam were all experiencing long-term relationships coming to an end.

It’s something that is especially obvious in both ‘Blindside’ and the first single ‘Savage’.

“Our first single ’Savage’ really represents the apathy in looking back, and trying to find some understanding,” Crook said in a press release. “‘Blindside’ is less about one particular experience and is kind of a commentary on modern love and its shortcomings. There was a moment in the studio where we were all thinking, ‘what are the odds that three humans are working on one of hundreds of albums across the country and are in the same spot in their love lives’, but I mean you see it all around. Maybe it’s just coincidence, maybe it’s the moon, ya know? That’s what the album title really means. There seems to be a great divide with people, places, and hearts these days not a lot of cohesion.”

Stream Nuela Charles’ ‘Long Way Down’ for Free

To celebrate her album Distant Danger being nominated for Adult Contemporary Album of the year at the 2019 Junos, Nuela Charles has shared a free stream of her new single ‘Long Way Down’.

This song came out of a session with production duo Towers. As we were writing it, the production began to feel inspired by old chain-gang songs. The fierce stomps and claps in the beat were being looped around, and I kept hearing the words long way down accompanied by the image of a river in my head,” Charles said in an e-mail.

“Thematically, I wanted “Long Way Down” to feel hopeful and soulful. It’s a reflection on today’s world – the glorification of status and money, the fear of losing it. Society loves to watch people fail (Britney much?!) Despite this, there is a blessing to stripping it all away and starting anew,” she said. “A fresh slate may be one of the hardest things you’ll ever go through, but it can truly be a blessing.”

Videos for a Lazy Sunday: Frenship’s ‘Wanted a Name’ (Feat. Yoke Lore)

Frenship, the duo of James Sunderland and Brett Hite, have shared the Eliza Brownlie-directed video for ‘Wanted a Name’, featuring Yoke Lore.

The clip features actress Millicent Simmonds (A Quiet Place, Wonderstruck) who is hearing impaired, delivering a performance of the song in American Sign Language in a serene natural setting.

Sunderland and Hite were inspired to create the video after learning that there were requests for a sign language interpreter for hearing impaired fans at their performance at Lollapalooza 2018. Wanting to provide something for this often overlooked segment of music fans, they reached out Simmonds after becoming fans of her performance in the 2018 sci-fi horror movie A Quiet Place.

They were amazed at her performance and wanted to collaborate on a video that showed how hearing impaired people experience and express themselves through music.

“She really brought the video to life and highlighted the deaf community in a way we’re honored to be a part of,” FRENSHIP said in a statement. “It’s really cool seeing two languages play out on screen—ASL and English, one seen and one heard. This video is about the co-existence of those two languages and bringing the deaf music experience to a wider audience.”

“I hope this video gives people some insight into how deaf people feel about music and how we experience music. Music can be visual as well as audible. I love this song and am so honored that FRENSHIP asked me to be a part of it,” Simmonds added.

‘Wanted a Name’ is taken from their forthcoming album, out via Counter Records, release date and title TBA. The track was inspired by returning to a quiet home life after going out on the road as part of their first headlining tour.

They also shared a video for an acoustic version of the track;

Videos for a Lazy Sunday: Kid Dad’s ‘Naked Creatures’

Marius Vieth, guitarist and vocalist for German indie rockers Kid Dad, had this to say about their ‘Naked Creatures’ in an e-mail; “I wrote this song two years ago while I was spending some very calm and therapeutic time in Switzerland. I cut myself off from the world around me and cocooned myself in my great uncle’s organ room. The song plays on two extremes – introvertism and extrovertism – we have always combined these two elements, but never to this extent.”
