Videos For a Lazy Sunday: Barnett + Coloccia’s ‘So How Much Do You Know About Me?’

Considering that Faith Coloccia and Alex Barnet are separated by 2000 miles, the title of the first single from their forthcoming EP Retrieval is fitting; ‘So How Much Do You Know About Me?’

Barnett + Coloccia‘s Retrieval is out on December 2 on Blackest Ever Black.

Despite the distance, the pair did meet in person, recording the bulk of the seven tracks over the course of three days at Otic Sound in Vancouver using a combination of Coloccia’s treated vocals,  tape-manipulated acoustic recordings and AM radio sounds with Barnet adding synths to create additional loops, beats and rhythmic elements. They got together again for the final mixing and editing session at AVAST! Studio in Seattle with engineer/producer Randall Dunn.

The result is a collection of songs that’s introspective in nature but cosmic in scope.

No One Dances Quite Like Var On Debut LP

Image by Kristian Emdal

Dutch band Var have announced that they will release their debut album No One Dances Quite Like My Brothers on Sacred Bones on May 14.

Co-founder/bandleader Loke Rahbek said the album is, “a European record, recorded in America or an American record, recorded by Europeans. Either way, it is the first full length by Vår, written and recorded over a week, on borrowed equipment in Heaven Street Studios in Brooklyn, summer 2012.”

He also offered the following explanation for the album’s cover artwork; “The cover is a mirror and thus changes with whoever is holding it. Looking at it, you are the cover. It’s music to remind you to be as pretty as possible.”

The four-piece used everything from coustic guitar, power electronics, bass, trumpet, multi-tracked vocals, and various percussive instruments, to broken glass & sheet metal samples to explore themes of love, loss, vanity, hope, fear, sexuality and friendship as well as taking a literary bent to their lyrics.

Album cover artwork and tracklisting is below;

3. No One Dances Quite Like My Brothers
4. Motionless Duties
5. Hair Like Feathers

The Belle Game Release New Single & Video

Vancouver’s The Belle Game has released their new 7″ single ‘Wait Up For You’ along with the accompanying video.

The track will also appear on their upcoming album Ritual Tradition Habit, out on April 16 on Boompa. The band worked with John Raham on the 12-track effort.

The video tells the tale of two girls attempt to escape a failing cult in the 1960’s.

“The band was very encouraging with the technical approach we wanted to take with the video. With this in mind, I got to do a lot of things I’ve been itching to try for a while now, like long tracking shots, slow zooms and carefully composed static shots [all shot on 16 mm]. The intention was to not take any music video short cuts for cheap effect, and to instead implore a more patient approach… till shit falls apart at the end, of course,” director Kheaven Lewandowski explained in a statement.

The band also unveiled their SxSW dates;

03/14 – Austin, TX @ Brass House (12am)
03/16 – Austin, TX @ Friends Bar (5pm)
